Choosing an Executor or Trustee

“Certainly,” says Steve. “One critical step in estate planning is choosing an executor for your will or a trustee for your trust. This individual or entity will be responsible for managing your assets, paying debts, and distributing your property according to your wishes after you’re gone. Consequently, selecting the right person is paramount.”
Steve explains that the ideal candidate should be trustworthy, organized, and financially savvy. They should also be willing and able to handle the responsibilities involved. “Ordinarily, people choose a close family member or friend,” Steve notes. “However, it’s important to consider their capabilities and potential conflicts of interest.”
Moreover, Steve cautions against assuming that the oldest child or closest relative is automatically the best choice. “Sometimes, a professional trustee, like a bank or trust company, may be more appropriate, especially if your estate is complex or there are family dynamics that could complicate matters,” he advises.
“Notwithstanding the choice you make, clear communication with your chosen executor or trustee is essential. Discuss your wishes openly and ensure they understand their duties and responsibilities. You can even provide them with a copy of your estate plan for reference.”
